Darkthrone. When most Black Metal fans hear that name they think of masterpieces like A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Under a Funeral Moon, and Transilvanian Hunger. Those albums are considered at the top of the Black Metal genre. After listening to this album for the first time i had to ask myself what has happened to this band. What has happened to the band that was once at the top of the Black Metal genre. Basically this album is some generic Punk Rock mixed with Black Metal vocals. This is F.O.A.D.

Guitar-wise this is nothing special at all. Basically, every song has one riff that it sticks to with an occasional solo. The solos are decent, but not enough to make up for how horrible and repetitive the riffs are. Now if you're thinking that Darkthrone has always been a very repetitive band, you couldn't be more right. The difference is that on the early albums, it actually sounded good. They played like that to create an atmosphere. On this album they're doing it because they have nothing better to play.

Drumming on this album is very simple. The Fenriz that we all used to know and love is long gone on this album. Again, the repetitive drumming of past albums used to be to make a point and to create an atmosphere. Also, the drumming used to be rather fast. Here its very, very slow and very simple. Basically, the band could've picked up anbody off the street who had no drumming experience at all and they could've played the drums on this album.

Now, as most of you know, Nocturno Culto used to be an amazing vocalist. Well forget about great vocals on this album. He no longer sounds like a pure Black Metal vocalist. He has a mix of Black Metal and Punk vocals going on now, more on the Punk side of things. I actually once listened to Transilvanian Hunger and then listened to this right after and you wouldn't be able to tell that it is the same person doing the vocals. It's that bad.

From what i've heard on this album, the Darkthrone that we love/loved is never coming back. I dont even know if i'm going to check out their next album after what this sounds like. I dont know if i'll be able to take the pain. If you're a fan of earlier albums, there's really no point in checking this out because i can pretty much guarantee that you will be dissapointed. This might be the album to check out if you're looking for a good laugh though.
