Summary: Pure deathcore brutality...with some seriously crappy breakdowns.

I must say, with this album With Blood Comes Cleansing blasted their way onto my list of favorite bands. As soon as I can find a copy of Golgotha, it is mine.

I first got into metal my freshman year of high school, inspired by a gothic friend and her Slipknot-filled iPod. Ever since then, my taste of metal has expanded as I grew into heavier and heavier stuff. Deathcore is my most recent discovery, and possibly one of my favorites. WBCC, in my opinion, is a premier deathcore band. The following is my opinion on their latest album, Horror.

Horror starts of with some cryptic noise, with a guttural voice reading a Bible verse. A good opener, it gives some anticipation and anxiety before the crash…

Hematidrosis is the crash. It begins with drums and then an explosive scream. Here is where I first realized Dean Atkinson pwns all over Mike Sasser. His voice is so much more forceful and less raspy than Sasser’s screeches. The song continues with tossing the vocals between a low, bestial growl and high-pitched shriek. Then comes an abrupt change: a “clean” scream interlude of sorts which repeats a few times before returning to the shriek-and-growl pattern of the beginning. Final verdict: Very repetitive, but in a good way: 9/10

Lash Upon Lash has to be my favorite song on the album. The guitar work and the vocals work together so well, like meshing cogs (< Never heard that one before). The thrashing guitars open then Dean’s growl kicks in and another toss-off between shrieks and growls before (insert Hallelujah chorus here) an incredible “chorus”, for lack of a better word. The guitars continue to pulse as a part about tearing skin, then the first breakdown of the album, and the only decent one as well. The song ends with another bit about Jesus’ torture. Final verdict: Incredible chorus, the only suitable breakdown on the whole album: 10/10

Forsaken opens with a few guitar licks, then a gap filled with a low growl. The growl continues for a few seconds before bursting into a high scream which holds for and OMG long time. Underneath the shriek, low vocals rush through a completely unintelligible mass of pig grunts. The guitars float on for a second before the grunts return, then, no way, understandable vocals! Blended with the high screams and the low growls, they make up the “chorus”. Not a great breakdown, though. Final verdict: Catchy chorus, but repetitive and not as well-blended as Lash Upon Lash: 8/10

Filthy Stains, ugh, worst song on the album. It has very few memorable qualities, and therefore is extremely forgettable. The guitars on this one are really good, but the vocal part is boring and isn’t catchy at all. To boot, there’s another crappy WBCC breakdown. Final verdict: Very forgettable, boring: 5/10

Yay! The good stuff is back! The Suffering is infinitely better than its predecessor. The guitars and vocals are back to working in harmony after their argument in Stains. Suffering is more hardcore-tinged than many of the other songs on Horror, but it is very catchy and the guitars are fast and punching. The growls and the shrieks of Atkinson forever mingle into a vocal masterpiece. Final verdict: Whoo, thought the album was going downhill for a second…Catchy and creative guitar parts, slightly more hardcore than other tracks: 9/10

Blood and Fire starts immediately with squealing shrieks and speeding guitars. This is a very powerful song full of nonstop brutality. A forceful, machinegun-blast chorus is spoiled by another sub-par breakdown. However, this is a very good song, one of the faster ones. Final verdict: Brutal and speeding death metal gold…horrible breakdown: 9/10

Abaddon’s Horde has to be my second favorite song on the album. A war-chant-like feel makes the monstrous lyrics even better. This song contains one of the greatest metal moments ever, the scream of DEATH at the beginning of the breakdown sends a chill down my spine every time. The rest of the breakdown isn’t that great. Final verdict: Awesome song with a chant-ish feel. Incredible moment with the DEATH scream: 10/10

The title track of the album surprisingly isn’t one of the better songs. The intro makes it sound a lot better than the rest of the song will be. The shout of HORROR and the chorus at the beginning are the best part of the whole song. The rest of it is basically just one big, awful breakdown. Final verdict: Starts good, then crashes and burns. 7/10

Carnivorous Consumption is the fastest and bloodiest song of Horror. The guitars speed through and Dean Atkinson’s screams about carcasses rush to keep up. The breakdown on this song is the most disappointing, simply because it ruins one of the best songs. The breakdown simply slices the song in half it’s so abrupt. Still, this song is another one of the better ones. Final verdict: Very fast, very heavy, very catchy…disappointing breakdown. 10/10…but just barely.

Damnation comes as a more hardcore than death metal song. It also repeats many of the qualities of earlier songs, aspects of Hematidrosis, Lash Upon Lash, and Forsaken are noticeable. The hardcore chorus is catchy enough, though. Final verdict: More hardcore again, and repeats the characteristics of other songs. Still, kind of catchy: 8/10

Eternal Reign ends the album. It is NOT one of the best songs. It is the best one to close the album, however. Both lyrically and musically it gives a sense of finality. The chorus is, again, slightly catchy, but the rest of the song isn’t very memorable. Final verdict: Good choice of an ending song, but not an incredible song in general. Catchy chorus, boring rest of song: 8/10

Overall, I give Horror a 4.5. The lesser songs are outweighed by the awesome ones. My one true problem with this album is the breakdowns. They’re all the same and they aren’t even that good to begin with, with the exceptions of Lash Upon Lash and Hematidrosis.

Recommended Tracks: Hematidrosis, Lash Upon Lash, The Suffering, Abaddon’s Horde, Carnivorous Consumption.
